Health Benefit # 2: Ease Back Pain

Aches & Pains

Lower back pain is the number 2 reason in North America (after colds and the flu) for a visit to the doctor. Millions of people suffer needlessly.

In hot water, your circulation adjusts to create a slight increase in blood pressure and blood rushes to the skin, where it's further warmed. The blood vessels expand and the pressure drops back down. The warmed blood penetrates deeper into the tissue below the skin, bringing more oxygen. As more vessels expand, you notice a soothing sensation. Your muscles start to relax. You body becomes more efficient at cleansing carbon dioxide from muscles and your immune system kicks in, increasing antibody production, and endorphins - the body's natural painkillers -- are released, melting away aches and pains.

Add to this the therapeutic stimulation of high-pressure jet nozzles pulsing hot water onto your sore muscles and joints. The massaging action on body tissue blocks pain input by acting as a counter-irritant on nerve endings. Clustered jets massage specific groups of muscles simultaneously - such as the neck, shoulders, back or feet. And you can direct jets to deliver bubbling water streams in a moving pattern to provide progressive relaxation of a muscle group. You can also use specialized massage inserts to put just the right amount of pressure on specific areas just as a massage varies muscle manipulation for maximum effect.

For many years Europeans have used Hydrotherapy (soaking in hot baths of mineral water) as an alternative treatment for various chronic diseases.  Yet, the effectiveness of such therapy for chronic low back pain has not been well documented.

In 1995, a study published in the British Journal of Rheumatology offered evidence that hot tub therapy has both short and long-term benefits for people with lower back pain.

A later study, published in the Journal of Rheumatology by a group of researchers in France , sought to conform these results and quantify the overall benefits of spa therapy.

After three weeks of consistent spa therapy, examinations showed more improvement in the health status (as measured in pain duration and intensity and back flexibility) of the spa treatment group than in the medication-only group.  After six months, significant improvement continued in the spa therapy group.  In addition, their use of analgesics and anti-inflammatory drugs had decreased.

The preceding research information was featured in the March-April 1996 issue of Arthritis Today, compiled and edited by Mary Anne Dunkin.

Back Pain #2 Reason for All Doctor Visits
There's always been anecdotal evidence that the hot water and jets of a hot tub
relieves back pain. But no scientific studies have ever validated this
belief-held by at least 95% of all Beachcomber owners. Now the Foundation
for Physical Therapy (FPT) has agreed to pursue a study in conjunction with
the National Spa and Pool Institute to determine if soaking in a spa is
effective at easing lower back pain. The study begins 2004 with
findings to be released in 2005. Stay tuned.
